We’re proud to shine a spotlight on our wonderful volunteer, Vivien, whose kindness and commitment help make a meaningful difference for families visiting our Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland Family Room at Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Vivien joined the Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland volunteer team in 2024 following her retirement from Queensland X-Ray, where she worked for 22 years. While retirement has provided more time for family, gardening, reading and travelling adventures with her partner, Vivien knew she wanted to spend some of her newfound time giving back to the community.
Her connection to our mission comes from personal experience. Many years ago, a member of her extended family faced the unimaginable challenge of having an extremely ill child. Living in regional New South Wales, the family needed to relocate urgently to Sydney for treatment.
During that difficult time, Ronald McDonald House provided more than just accommodation. It gave the family a place where they could stay together when they needed each other most.
Witnessing that support firsthand left a lasting impression on Vivien and inspired her to help other families facing similar challenges.
Today, Vivien volunteers once a fortnight in our Ronald McDonald House Family Room at the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, helping families take a moment to rest away from the hospital environment.
Our Family Rooms are a calm, caring space inside the hospital where families can stay close, rest, and recharge.
Whether she’s making pancakes, offering a friendly conversation or simply ensuring the space feels welcoming, she understands how important small acts of kindness can be.
One moment, in particular, has stayed with her.
Just minutes before the end of one of her shifts, a mother returned to our Family Room to express her gratitude. After spending six months in hospital with her child, the family was finally preparing to return home to North Queensland.
The mother told Vivien how much the Family Room had meant to her and described it as a haven, especially the quiet room, during an incredibly challenging time.
Stories like these remind us that sometimes the simplest gestures can have the greatest impact.
While volunteering can at times be emotionally challenging, Vivien believes the personal rewards are immense. Knowing she is helping families through difficult circumstances brings a strong sense of purpose and satisfaction, particularly when small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact on someone’s day.
She also values the strong sense of community that comes with being part of the Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland volunteer team. The support provided by employees and fellow volunteers creates a welcoming environment, while also offering opportunities to build new friendships and connections.
For anyone considering volunteering, Vivien encourages people to explore the many varied opportunities available across the organisation. She believes there is a role for everyone and that volunteering is a rewarding way to give back to the community while supporting families when they need it most.
Supporting Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland has become something of a family affair for Vivien.
One proud moment came during the Brisbane Marathon Festival this year when her son, John, took on the challenge of running the full 42-kilometre marathon while fundraising for Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland.
Cheered on by family from the sidelines, John completed the marathon in impressive time. To Vivien’s delight, he also became the event’s highest fundraiser for the charity.
Vivien describes it as a very proud moment for them all.
Volunteering with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland is a meaningful way to meet new people and help families stay strong during their child’s medical journey. All it takes is a compassionate heart and the willingness to give your time.
