Applications for the Charlie Bell Scholarship are now open. Supporting young people whose education has been impacted by illness or injury.
Charlie Bell Scholarship

For young people recovering from an illness or injury, returning to education can be one of the most important steps forward. Yet the journey back to school, training, or tertiary study is often filled with challenges.

That’s why we are proud to announce that applications for the Ronald McDonald House Charlie Bell Scholarship are now open. This scholarship provides financial support and encouragement to young people who have had their education disrupted by illness or injury.

What is the Charlie Bell Scholarship?

We understand that illness or injury can significantly impact a child’s education – creating gaps in learning, disrupting routines and progress, and adding extra pressure for families. That’s why the Charlie Bell Scholarship exists.

By awarding one-off $5,000 grants to deserving young people, we’re giving them the chance to get their education or career back on track.

The scholarship can help cover:

  • University tuition fees and course costs
  • TAFE and vocational training expenses
  • Apprenticeship tools and equipment
  • Textbooks and essential study supplies
  • Educational technology and learning resources
  • Other education-related expenses

Applications are open to young people aged 15 to 20 who have been treated for an illness or injury and are beginning their tertiary or vocational education.

A scholarship that changes futures

Every Charlie Bell Scholarship recipient has a unique story of resilience, determination, and hope.

Last year’s recipient, Ashton, demonstrated extraordinary perseverance, completing Year 12 while undergoing treatment for a brain tumour and rehabilitation. During this time, his family stayed at Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland South Brisbane, where they were provided with a place to stay strong, close and connected to Ashton.

Today, Ashton is attending university on the Gold Coast and pursuing a dream of a career in healthcare, inspired by the professionals who supported his recovery.

Continuing Charlie Bell’s legacy

The scholarship honours the legacy of the late Charlie Bell, the first Australian Global CEO of McDonald’s. Charlie was known for his passion for helping young people achieve their potential. Following his passing after a courageous battle with cancer, the scholarship was established to support young Australians to achieve their goals.

Today, that legacy continues through each scholarship awarded, helping recipients pursue their ambitions with confidence and providing opportunities that might otherwise feel out of reach.
