Family stays supported with tutoring to keep learning on track
We understand that illness or injury can significantly impact a child’s education, creating gaps in learning, disrupting routines, and adding extra pressures for families. Our education support ensures families stay supported with pathways that help children stay connected throughout treatment and recovery.
At Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland, we bring together three key areas of educational support: the Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland Learning Program, EDMed, and the Charlie Bell Scholarship. Together, these services provide vital support to students, families, and educators through a child’s transition back to school.
Our Learning Program assists school-aged children with an illness or injury to catch up on missed education following treatment and recovery.
From improving numeracy and literacy skills, to identifying learning strengths and weaknesses, we aim to make the journey back to school as smooth as possible, while also providing a much-needed confidence boost.
The program provides a suite of educational support services, including therapy sessions (where required) and one-on-one tutorials with experienced teachers that are tailored to the student’s individual needs.
Each program is tailored depending upon the child’s needs, location and family situation. Most children will receive up to four school terms of one-on-one tuition with a qualified and registered teacher, along with speech and/or occupational therapy if required.
We aim to build each child’s confidence and self-esteem in preparation for their return to the classroom. All services are free to families thanks to funding from our generous Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland supporters.
Our Learning Program pays teachers hourly to provide one‑on‑one tuition to students recovering from illness or injury, either at the student’s school, a local community facility, or via Zoom.
An illness or injury can make life stand still. Making any progress – whether in your education or your career – can feel almost impossible. That’s why the Charlie Bell Scholarship Program exists.

EDMed® is a free, two-hour professional development session for teachers.
Planning for the return of a student who has suffered an illness or injury can present challenges for teaching staff. EDMed provides a range of educational strategies and information to assist the smooth transition and integration of the student back to school.
This online module is delivered in a self-paced, online learning environment and also provides helpful information for pre-service education students on placement. It covers important background information on some common health conditions faced by students in our classrooms every day. Along with the background knowledge, the module outlines strategies to assist when planning for these students.
A certificate is available once the module has been completed.
