A volunteer who does it all

Sonja never imagined a single recommendation would lead to over 600 hours of impact and countless moments of connection.

Each volunteer who walks through our doors brings a unique story, skill set and spirit of generosity that helps us create a home away from home for families in need. Our wonderful Sonja is a beautiful example of this, giving so much of her time, heart and compassion to ensure every family feels supported, welcomed and cared for.

Life outside of volunteering

Before joining Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland, Sonja built an impressive career in the building industry, working across logistics and customer service before spending eight years as a colour consultant. Every day, she helped people bring warmth, personality and comfort into their homes – something she now brings to her volunteer work in a beautifully different way.

Outside of volunteering, Sonja is very much a family-focused person. She’s married with two children and three much-loved grandchildren. In her downtime, you’ll often find her gardening, crafting, or working on creative projects.

Sonja’s journey with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland

Like many of our volunteers, Sonja’s journey began with a personal recommendation. Encouraged by fellow volunteer, Cindi, she decided to give Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland a try – and we are incredibly grateful she did. Since joining in May 2024, Sonja has become a valued and much-loved member of our volunteer community.

You’ll find her here every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, supporting families across of range of important areas, including:

  • Guest Ambassador duties

Her willingness to jump in wherever she’s needed has made her an essential part of our daily rhythm.

Beyond her weekly shifts, Sonja has also been a wonderful support to our fundraising team – generously volunteering at both our annual Race Day and Gala Ball, which she describes as standout moments in her time with us.

No two days in our Houses or Family Rooms are ever the same, but Sonja approaches each shift with purpose. Whether she’s welcoming guests, helping in the kitchen or contributing to the comforting, homely environment we pride ourselves on, she plays a key role in ensuring families can focus on what matters most: caring for their child.

Making an impact

For Sonja, the most rewarding part of volunteering comes down to connection.

“There’s nothing more special than meeting new people and knowing you’ve helped make a tough day a little easier for a family.”

Her genuine care for others shines through every shift, and anyone who has worked alongside her can speak to the kindness and positivity she brings into our spaces.

In 2025, Sonja was recognised with the Most Volunteering Hours Award, an achievement that reflects more than 600 hours dedicated to supporting our Chapter across various roles. This remarkable contribution speaks volumes about her commitment, consistency and the heart she brings to every role she takes on.

“Volunteering with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. You see the difference you make every single day, and that’s something I would encourage anyone to be a part of.”

Sonja’s story is a beautiful reminder that giving your time can change not only the lives of others, but your own as well.
