A lifetime of heart and service

From parent to volunteer, Jean’s journey with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland spans more than 25 years.

From family to volunteer

Jean’s journey with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland began not as a volunteer, but as a parent. In March 1993, Jean first walked through the doors of Ronald McDonald House at the Mater alongside her son, Steven, who was undergoing medical treatment. What began as a place of support during a difficult time soon became a place Jean would call her second home.

During those early years, Jean and her family stayed at the House many times – sometimes for several months, other times for shorter stays. It was during these stays that Jean began naturally helping around the House, tidying cupboards, cleaning, defrosting fridges, filling the hot water urn, and baking for other guests. Her homemade slices, cakes, biscuits, and even full roast dinners quickly became something families looked forward to.

A calling to give back

Jean’s desire to help grew into a lifelong commitment. In 2000, she became the first officially registered volunteer for Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland – marking the beginning of more than 25 years of extraordinary service. She volunteered on weekends, often staying overnight, checking families in and out, and ensuring they felt safe and supported during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Jean found joy in the small but meaningful moments: making a cup of tea or coffee, offering freshly baked treats, or simply sitting down for a chat. She also brought magic to special occasions – playing Santa and the Easter Bunny, organising Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts, and helping families celebrate milestones with warmth and care.

Adapting and growing with our Chapter

Over the years Jean has worn many hats and as our Houses grew, Jean grew with them.

When our Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland Family Rooms opened up in the Gold Coast University Hospital, Jean continued her service there, helping to create a calm, caring space inside the hospital where families can stay close, rest, and recharge. One role she especially loved doing was preparing cupcakes to celebrate premature babies reaching their 100-day milestone.

“No matter what I’ve done as a volunteer, I have always done it from my heart.”

A legacy worth celebrating

In 2012, Jean was quietly inducted into the ‘Ronald McDonald House Hall of Fame’, a testament to her long-standing dedication. In 2025, her legacy was further honoured  when we introduced our very first ‘Honorary Lifetime Volunteer Award’ and Jean was named the inaugural recipient.

This award recognises not just the years Jean has given, but the compassion, generosity, and heart she has shared so consistently.

“Volunteering with Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland was my calling. I volunteered because I wanted to make a difference in families’ lives while their child was sick in hospital.”
